I HUNT WITH HOUNDS! What is better radio telemetry or gps tracking collars?

I have never owned tracking collars but would like to so I can make sure my pups are not going near a road or to collect them at the end of a hunt. I have used radio tracking with friends never used gps. Gps sounds so much better and cost the same but my concern is battery life. The garmin astro gives a battery life of 22 hours but I am not sure if that is the handheld unit or the collar. My friends radio collar provides weeks of signal thanks to new battery tech. Does anyone have experience with both? it is a big chunk of $ to not be sure..

  1. No matter what you decide, make sure to factor weather and its ability to impact satellite reception for GPS. Clear day, not an issue. Snow? That doesnt answer it totally, but I hope it helps.
  2. GPS is a lot easier to use. If battery life is a concern, get lithium batteries. They keep going and going and going and....
