I need a handheld GPS for my boat. Any suggestions?
I went to the boating store and there were so many, I was overwhelmed. I live on the south shore of Long Island. I have a small, 18 foot Sea Ray, so I only need something that will keep me safe and get me where I am going. Garmin has so many, but I just don't know what I need. I am looking to get away as inexpensive as possible!!! Thanks

- www.thegpsstore.com Garmin works well in the water.
- might as well get a cheap one. its good for finding your best fishing spots as well. An 18 footer is not going too far off shore anyway. and a compass lets you know where west is also. better you have a cell phone fully charged.
- Agree with Tony C above, Garmin has been making marine GPS units for many years and is always rated very high. Go with Garmin. If you're looking for inexpensive, do some research on what features each model has vs. what you need (http://www.gpsreview.net/category/gps-systems/marine/) then check some of the sites that sell used units, Ebay, Amazon, Craigslist etc... Good Luck!
- i have a garmin 76 its good and would and did recomend it to my friends dont get the street model unless you plan to use it in your car get the basic one for boating as long as it has a lat and lon and they all have that
- Garmin 76 Cx - I used a Garmin 76 for years and it was a great, reliable unit - but the Cx displays maps which is much better.
- I have a Garmin handheld and have used it all over. U.S., Abacos, and the Carribbean. Saved my butt in the Abacos. Like it very much, even used it yesterday to check the set on the safety buoys on my lake.
- I have a Garmin handheld unit that is my most trusted possession when I am in the woods. They work perfectly on land, and I would bet that they are even better on the water.
