Can anyone recommend a good handheld gps to use whilst visiting a number of US cities which would also work?

when i am back in UK.Plan to visit east and west coast usa.Wont have access to car when there but will have car back in uk.Thanks

Try Garmin brand devices, I have no idea which models are available where you are but, I have one of their handhelds and it picks up plenty enough satellites in the States to get great elevation and location information.
