- You are not being clear about what is malfunctioning. A common problem with GPS receivers left in the hot or cold is a screen malfunction. In the cold, the LCD screen will be sluggish and slow to update. In the hot, the screen will show black or purple colors without even being turned on. Extreme temperatures can damage the LCD display. GPS receivers will only work within certain temperature ranges that are listed in your owners manual.
