Is it safe to use a handheld GPS on an airliner? I'm going on a long flight pretty soon and I have a handheld Garmin GPS. I'd like to use it to see where I am, how fast we're going, stuff like that. Is it safe to turn a GPS on when flying? What about during takeoff and landing?
What handheld GPS would you buy and why? I am looking for a handheld GPS unit that I can do three things with 1) go exploring in the woods 2) Get into Geocaching 3) take a trip to Europe or other places that I've never been and be able to find my way home.
Where can I get map software (Australia) for a Magellan handheld GPS? My husband has a Magellan handheld GPS. He is having trouble getting suitable map software for motorbike riding in the Victorian State Forrest. He needs to have bush tracks, creeks, rivers and location of mountains etc. Any ideas of where to look would be great. We don't mind buying it.

Need info on purchasing a handheld GPS which is applicable for aviation and finding my way out of the woods... I have checked out Garmin, Lowrance, and Magellan. Lowrance has the Airmap 600c which is the closest for aviation purposes, and price range, but I couldn't get any good info for the terrestrial use, if it even has any, for that particular model. I also checked out the Garmin 96c. The Lowrance seems to have more for less. Could never get through the Lowrance phone line to talk to an actual person. As a student GA pilot, I am interested in a handheld model that would serve me in the air, as well as if I had to ditch in an unknown area such as a forest, etc, and lived to walk my way out! Just trying to find a model that has the best of both applications. Want to stay within the 300-500. dollar range. Can be flexible within 100 dollars more if necessary. Any suggestions?
Which model of handheld GPS systems will work well in mountain and forest area? I plan on using a GPS to navigate trails, and count my mileage on horseback. I am a trail guide for a horse pack station and our trails go through high mountains and thick trees. I don't plan on spending more than $200. What do a greater number of channels in a GPS handheld unit signify? From RICH's answer, I can gather than the degree of precision is enhanced by having a greater number of channels. But in theory, only 3 GPS satellites and a maximum of 4 can be overhead at a point at a specific time. If that's the case, having to spend around a $$$ more on a unit with 24 channels seems pointless :S
Can anybody recommend a handheld GPS? I am a keen walker and intend broadening my horizons. I would like a handheld fit for a starter that will take me into intermediate level and possibly into advanced. I know it's a tall order but not as tall as this next request. Can it be used abroad (outside Europe) and will it have supporting software? Thank you very much in advance.
What is the best handheld GPS for approx. $150? I'm looking for a birthday present for this weekend so if you have some tips of physical stores in the phoenix area that I could shop at that would be very helpful too. It is for general use around the city maybe some camping, mostly the coolest gadget for that price- it's for a bit of a tech nerd.
anybody know of any good handheld gps devices available or coming out in future? IIve seen alot of gps hardware and 1 of the things that they all have in common and that stands out the most is that the graphics,/interface designs are absolutly atrocious. Why don't they release gps hardware that intergrates google maps inside of them? I think the iphone 3g does this but I cannot afford rogers monthly rates.
Which handheld GPS system to buy? We have a GPS program on our laptop, but want a smaller portable system for using in our vehicles, as well as when snowmobiling. We enjoy traveling in some places where the roads aren't even on the map.

Best handheld GPS for International Travel? I am traveling to Africa this summer and wanted to know what the best GSP would be, I need one that will be cheap, but work great. I just want to be able to know where I am and maybe be able to use it for turn-by-turn when I get back intop the states.
Best Handheld GPS unit for use at Glacier National Park? (under $200)? I will be going to Glacier National Park and I want a GPS unit to aid my travel. I am currently looking at the Garmin GPS 60. From what I have read, it is non-mapping. I'm not really sure what that means... The reviews I have read are great. Q's 1. What does non-mapping mean (don't tell me it means it doesn't map, because I know it has a map on it) 2. Can someone suggest a handheld GPS unit for hiking (under $200)

Which handheld gps would be best? I would like to buy one of the following: a Magellan eXplorist 200, 210, 400, or 500LE or the Garmin eTrex Legend, or another one that is good for under $200 I've read a lot of reviews about them, but am still confused. A lot of reviews say one thing, and then the opposite on another site. I want to get one for my mother, so I would like to get one that is easy to use, durable and is good to use for geo caching, hiking and rock hounding. Any advice on what ones are best for these types of activities and how their customer service and support are would be welcome. Thanks.
Can anyone recommend a good handheld GPS unit? My trusty Garmin eTrex finally gave up the ghost this weekend and died. It was my fault, not anything wrong with it. I dropped it down a bluff when I was climbing down to get it, a rock I kicked up fell on it and crushed the screen. I hate to admit it, but I have really come to depend on it more than I care to think about. I was about 12 miles down a forrestry service road and hadn't been paying attention to my turns, after quite a few wrong turns and dead ends, I finally made it back to the main road. I really liked it but was wondering if anyone else had one they would recommend. I primarily use it for FS roads, hiking, camping, duck hunting, fishing, skiing etc. so my primary requirements are that it be very rugged able to handle lots of abuse, long battery life, waterproof, a compass, waypoints, breadcrumbs, etc. Regular roads driving directions features would be nice but are secondary importance. Anyone have one they use that they would recommend? And almost forgot, it must have a port for an external attenna.
