Garmin Handheld GPS Questions
Is it safe to use a handheld GPS on an airliner? I'm going on a long flight pretty soon and I have a handheld Garmin GPS. I'd like to use it to see where I am, how fast we're going, stuff like that. Is it safe to turn a GPS on when flying? What about during takeoff and landing?
Handheld GPS - Garmin? I am looking to buy my dad a Garmin for Father's Day next week. We do alot of boating on Lake Cumberland in Kentucky, which is full of coves and turns and twists which all look alike so a handheld device will be perfect. He mentioned wanting a handheld Garmin. Again, we will be using this on the boat mainly. Any recommendations are well appreciated. Thank you.
transferring data to and from a handheld Garmin GPS? Hi - I have had a Garmin e-trex venture GPS for about a year, but my laptop doesn't have one of the serial ports needed to connect the cable which came with the GPS. I finally got round to buying a cable which will connect it via a USB port...but now I cant figure out how on earth to transfer the data over! Please can someone help me? Should I have got some software with my GPS for this purpose? The owners manual is virtually useless. Thanks.
Can the handheld gps devices be used in cars? I was thinking about getting a handheld magellan or garmin gps. I do a lot of backpacking and I wanted to get one but at the same time can I use it in the car. Will it show streets and can I put an address to get to and from and it gives directions just like a car gps. obviously i dont know much about these but could anyone help me out by answering this question. Thanks
which is better a garmin handheld or a magellan handheld? I am looking into buying a relatively cheap handheld gps for geocaching, boating, hiking, and hunting. If i get a magellan it will either be the explorist 210 or the 500le if i go with garmin it will be the etrex legend, or the etrex legend hcx. What do you guys think?
What handheld GPS should I buy? PLEASE help me decide A.S.A.P? Alright I will give you some of the details: I want a good Garmin Handheld GPS device for Geocaching. I will be buying the Handheld GPS new from Amazon because I can save some money. The GPS device I want is either a GPSMAP 60CSx or a Colorado 300 (or maybe one of the other Colorado ones.) I will be mostly Geocaching in parks, urban areas, and wooded areas. I think I might buy some sort of mapping software to put on the GPS I buy (I don't know which one, if you have some good advice on a great one that would be greatly appreciated.) Both the GPSMAP 60CSx and The Colorado 300 cost under $500 new on Amazon. I am wiling to spend $550 and maybe more if another GPS device as broought to my attention as being better in some way than the ones I just listed. The reason I want one of these good GPS's is if I purchase one and when I receive it it doesn't do what I wanted to do, or it doesn't do it well I will be angry. Please help me decide on which handheld Garmin GPS I should purchase.
Is it good to rely on GPS in critical situations? I'm an avid backpacker/offroader and I'm pondering a high-tech handheld GPS unit (Garmin Vista HCx). I've been lost quite a few times, but always seem to find my way out. Also, I hate excess items/junk when I'm already packing 60 pounds. Is it worth the weight, trouble, and expense?
Best Handheld GPS unit for use at Glacier National Park? (under $200)? I will be going to Glacier National Park and I want a GPS unit to aid my travel. I am currently looking at the Garmin GPS 60. From what I have read, it is non-mapping. I'm not really sure what that means... The reviews I have read are great. Q's 1. What does non-mapping mean (don't tell me it means it doesn't map, because I know it has a map on it) 2. Can someone suggest a handheld GPS unit for hiking (under $200)
Need info on purchasing a handheld GPS which is applicable for aviation and finding my way out of the woods... I have checked out Garmin, Lowrance, and Magellan. Lowrance has the Airmap 600c which is the closest for aviation purposes, and price range, but I couldn't get any good info for the terrestrial use, if it even has any, for that particular model. I also checked out the Garmin 96c. The Lowrance seems to have more for less. Could never get through the Lowrance phone line to talk to an actual person. As a student GA pilot, I am interested in a handheld model that would serve me in the air, as well as if I had to ditch in an unknown area such as a forest, etc, and lived to walk my way out! Just trying to find a model that has the best of both applications. Want to stay within the 300-500. dollar range. Can be flexible within 100 dollars more if necessary. Any suggestions?
Which GPS.......Garmin 60CX or 60CSX or something else and why????? I am going to buy a handheld GPS to be used primarily for geocaching along with some car use and maybe hiking. $300 is my limit for the most part with a "small" cushion if absolutely necessary. I've been looking at the Garmin 60CX and the 60CSX and am leaning toward the CSX. My question to you folks is this. Which would you choose and why?? Is there another you would choose and why?? Thanks!! So the CX is just the CSX without the Altimeter and Compass?
Reccomend me a Garmin GPS for primarily boat use? There are a bunch of Garmins available. I need one for use on my boat. Navigation points and charts are important. What should I get? I'm looking at a handheld like the 76, but there are a lot to chose from!
garmin vs. magellan gps? I'm looking to buy a handheld GPS, but would like to find out who makes the better system. I will be using it for hunting, hiking, fishing, and traveling in car. Any help would be appreciated.
do handheld gps get closer to a waypoint than car gps? I've been shopping around for handheld gps's that can get to a waypoint but also give turn by turn directions for driving. I only want to spend a max of $150 and that is appearing to be very challenging. I have found the Garmin eTrex Legend Cx for $150, but I think I'd have to pay extra for street directions that involve more than the interstate(correct me if I'm wrong). Will $150 or less buy a good portable GPS for a car that can handle waypoints like a handheld GPS?
I need a handheld GPS for my boat. Any suggestions? I went to the boating store and there were so many, I was overwhelmed. I live on the south shore of Long Island. I have a small, 18 foot Sea Ray, so I only need something that will keep me safe and get me where I am going. Garmin has so many, but I just don't know what I need. I am looking to get away as inexpensive as possible!!! Thanks
What is the difference between the Garmin Etrex vista cx and GPSMap 60 CSX? Does anyone know the difference performance-wise between these 2 models? I have seen a comparison chart but I couldn't find anything that would explain the price difference... I am looking for a handheld GPS unit that would load topographical maps on it (for hiking). Any recommendation would be much appreciated! Thanks a lot!
What handheld GPSr would you suggest for close to $100 or under? I'm looking for a fairly cheap handheld GPSr mostly for geocaching in my area. I want something cheap but something that will work. I've been reading some reviews and a lot of them are very mixed for the lower end products. Two specific one's I've seen are the "Lowrance iFINDER GO2 Handheld GPS Receiver" for about $80 and the "Garmin Etrex H Handheld Monochrome GPS" for about $90. If anyone has used these or knows of possible better ones please let me know what you think. Or if you know something about handheld GPSs that you think I should know, don't be afraid to speak up. Thanks a lot everybody, all help is appreciated.
Can anyone recommend a good handheld GPS unit? My trusty Garmin eTrex finally gave up the ghost this weekend and died. It was my fault, not anything wrong with it. I dropped it down a bluff when I was climbing down to get it, a rock I kicked up fell on it and crushed the screen. I hate to admit it, but I have really come to depend on it more than I care to think about. I was about 12 miles down a forrestry service road and hadn't been paying attention to my turns, after quite a few wrong turns and dead ends, I finally made it back to the main road. I really liked it but was wondering if anyone else had one they would recommend. I primarily use it for FS roads, hiking, camping, duck hunting, fishing, skiing etc. so my primary requirements are that it be very rugged able to handle lots of abuse, long battery life, waterproof, a compass, waypoints, breadcrumbs, etc. Regular roads driving directions features would be nice but are secondary importance. Anyone have one they use that they would recommend? And almost forgot, it must have a port for an external attenna.
GPS & Geocaching: Whats the best & cheapest GPS for me? I'v been Geocaching [www.geocaching.com] for a while now, and i know your supposed to have a handheld GPS, but iv been using a car one! Im looking for a very cheap, possibly second hand if its going to be reliable, GPS, preferably Garmin, also i would like it to be able to run the WhereIGo applications that are growing on the web now. If anyone could suggest a good and cheap model, or can tell me a good place to look - street stores or online(prefered); i'd love you very much indeed!
Which handheld gps would be best? I would like to buy one of the following: a Magellan eXplorist 200, 210, 400, or 500LE or the Garmin eTrex Legend, or another one that is good for under $200 I've read a lot of reviews about them, but am still confused. A lot of reviews say one thing, and then the opposite on another site. I want to get one for my mother, so I would like to get one that is easy to use, durable and is good to use for geo caching, hiking and rock hounding. Any advice on what ones are best for these types of activities and how their customer service and support are would be welcome. Thanks.

What GPS unit do you use for geocaching? I discovered geocaching 3 months ago and love it! Ive been using my garmin nuvi 200 car unit and it works fine, but I want to get a handheld unit thats more rugged, with other features that are good for geocaching.

I have a few handheld ones for on the tril syuff, but a few months ago we purched a mallgen road mapfrogot the # after it(gps), and it stoped turning on, when we sent it back to get a refund we had to pay alot about $100, so Iam not wanting a mallgen Iam looking at garmins now which garmin for on the road would have the best value for themost features?
I HUNT WITH HOUNDS! What is better radio telemetry or gps tracking collars? I have never owned tracking collars but would like to so I can make sure my pups are not going near a road or to collect them at the end of a hunt. I have used radio tracking with friends never used gps. Gps sounds so much better and cost the same but my concern is battery life. The garmin astro gives a battery life of 22 hours but I am not sure if that is the handheld unit or the collar. My friends radio collar provides weeks of signal thanks to new battery tech. Does anyone have experience with both? it is a big chunk of $ to not be sure..
Need info on purchasing a handheld GPS which is applicable for aviation, and finding my way out of the woods.. I asked this question in another forum, but didn't get a satisfactory answer. I have checked out Garmin, Lowrance, and Magellan. Lowrance has the Airmap 600C, which is the closest for aviation purposes, and price range, but I couldn't get any good info for its' terrestrial use, if it even has any, for that particular model. Could never get through the Lowrance phone line to talk to a customer service rep, after 2 weeks of trying, but was always put on an indefinite automated hold! I also checked out the Garmin 96C. The Lowrance seems to have more for less. As a student GA(general aviation) pilot, I am interested in a handheld unit that would serve me in the air, as well as if I had to ditch in a forrest, or unknown area, etc,and lived to walk my way out! Just trying to find a unit that has the best of both aviation and terrestrial applications. Want to stay within the 300-500 dollar range. Can be flexible within a 100 dollars more if necessary. Any good suggestions?
